What We Research: Our Laboratory

Below is a sample of prototypes and software applications that we have built as part of our recent research work. We are particularly interested in exploring new interfaces for making computers easier to use; the human-computer interface; applying mathematical ideas to web animation; and creating new ways of visualizing data.

For a summary of our commercial work, please see our projects page.

Symbolyze demo screenshot Project Glassbrush: Images Come Alive Imagine if you could not only look at photos and images, but find out more about the objects and people within them. Project Glassbrush seeks to take the best elements of computer gaming, web interfaces and visual media to create a new kind of web experience that is based around images instead of text.

Alpha testing for the Glassbrush platform is scheduled for early 2010.
Symbolyze demo screenshot Symbolyze: Text Free Web Surfing the web may seem impossible for someone who can't read. But we don't believe that it is. Symbolyze is our first prototype of a symbol-based interface for the World Wide Web that uses no text.

3D Ant Architect 3D Ant Architect How many bits of data does it take to simulate the brain of a postmodern architect? Answer: three. We put a 3-state "ant" cellular automaton to work designing a tower block, complete with penthouse.

Flocking Birds Screenshot Flocking Birds Watch a 2-D simulation of birds flocking in the sky and change parameters to see the effect on their behaviour. Then, when you are bored of that, shoot them down!

Ant Machines Cellular Automata screenshot Cellular Automata: Ants Cellular Automata (CA) exhibit surprising behaviours from the application of simple rules, and are an excellent test case for research into emergence and complexity. This application runs Langton's Ant which corresponds to a 2-state CA, and any other K-state "ant" machine.
